Local football history made

This past weekend, the Bisons Football team made history by having the first female kicker, Maya Turner, score points (and win the game) in a Canadian U-Sport Football game.

A big Riverview connection is Coach Brian Dobie, the former Churchill head coach. But what some may not know is that there is another important Riverview connection in the form of 18-year-old Jake Deneka. Jake is the team long-snapper.  Jake, with the added help of Mike O’Shea Jr. (holder), got the ball off to Maya resulting in 2/2 field goals and 3/3 extra points scored to win the game and put her in the history books.

Jake, born and raised in Riverview, attended Ecole Riverview School and then Grant Park High School where he played for the Grant Park Pirates. He is currently a Freshman on the University of Manitoba Bisons football team, starting as the team’s long snapper.
